The influence of traditional wisdom/Ubuntu
The literal meaning of Ubuntu is Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu.
It translates as: A person is a person through other people. Or, My humanity is connected to yours.
But when considering the nature connection, a succinct definition emerges:
I am. Because we are. But only if the planet is.
This, for us, speaks to the totality of Ubuntu. A living consciousness that suggests that I can only be the best possible version of myself, if you are the best possible version of yourself. But, we depend on a healthy environment to achieve this. This totality transcends all attempts to disrupt, challenge or commercialise the principles.
What is the origin of Ubuntu?
It is a life philosophy or way of being that originated in ancient Africa. The origins emerged from the following pillars of community:
1. That a community is only as successful as the levels of co-operation between members.
2. That individuals still retain their personally identity and sovereignty.
3. That this mutual co-operation is of free will without any expectation in return
4. Care of nature and the environment goes without saying.
What is the relevance of Ubuntu in the modern world?
Perhaps the greatest example of this was Nelson Mandela. He embodied the inherent capacity of Ubuntu to problem-solve with peace, dignity and purpose. This process of dialogue, statesmanship and redemptive leadership was a leading initiative in world politics and conversation cultures.
Empathetic ecological well-being, humility, and inter-connections are essential to navigate the existential crises we are facing with hope and healing. By paying attention to the significance of traditional wisdom
Despite its origins in Africa, it is not ‘of’ Africa but of the world.
